ndia’s cold chain ecosystem is entering a decisive
transition phase where
electrification, intelligent
refrigeration, and sustainable
logistics are beginning to converge into a single operational
strategy. Signi昀椀cantly, a broader
transformation in urban freight
movement is shaping this shift. As
cities push for lower emissions,
quieter deliveries, and tighter
compliance around sustainability,
refrigerated logistics operators
are increasingly exploring electric mobility platforms that can
balance temperature integrity
with operational e昀케ciency. The
emergence of purpose-built
electric reefer vehicles, batterypowered refrigeration systems,
and high-voltage electric cooling
architectures signals the beginning of a structural shift in how
cold chain transportation will be
designed over the coming decade.
Among the clearest indicators
of this evolution is the arrival of
fully integrated electric refrigerated commercial vehicles tailored
for Indian operating conditions.
The SWITCH IeV4 Reefer represents this new direction, combining a 300V EV architecture with
temperature-controlled cargo
mobility capable of supporting
cooling applications from -25°C
to +25°C across frozen, chilled,
and fresh categories. Designed for
urban and regional distribution,
the vehicle integrates a 32.2 kWh
lithium-ion battery, a 60-kW
permanent magnet synchronous
motor, and connected telematics
through SWITCH iON technology
to enable real-time diagnostics,
fleet visibility, and predictive
operational management.
The platform also highlights
how energy optimisation is
becoming central to electric cold
chain operations. Its standby and
pre-cooling functionality allows
Integrated battery-powered
refrigeration, grid-assisted
pre-cooling, and intelligent
telematics are enabling fleets
to optimise energy usage,
extend driving range, improve
temperature consistency, and
lower maintenance costs.

Parallel momentum is emerging across the broader electric
commercial vehicle ecosystem.
Montra Electric recently rolled
out its 1,000th EVIATOR electric
small commercial vehicle, underlining growing 昀氀eet con昀椀dence
in electri昀椀ed cargo operations.
Built for high-utilisation urban
logistics, the EVIATOR platform
combines a 1.7-tonne payload,
liquid-cooled LFP battery technology, 170+ km real-world range,
and fast-charging capability,
making it increasingly suited for
last-mile and intra-city distribution applications where cold chain
operators require both uptime
and predictable operating costs.
At the refrigeration-system
level, electri昀椀cation is accelerating even faster. Thermo King’s
newly commercialised E-Volution
platform re昀氀ects how transport
refrigeration is moving away from
diesel-powered auxiliary systems
toward fully electric architectures.
Compatible with both batteryelectric and conventional truck
platforms, the system delivers up
to 45% lower CO₂ emissions compared to diesel refrigeration units
while improving temperature
stability, reducing maintenance
complexity, and supporting lownoise urban deliveries.
The market is simultaneously witnessing the rise of
compact electric refrigeration
innovations tailored for intracity logistics. Companies such
as Yotuh Energy and Hwasung
Thermo are introducing engineindependent electric refrigeration
systems capable of operating
across EV, CNG, and diesel commercial vehicles. These systems
emphasise faster pull-down
times, remote monitoring, lower
maintenance requirements, intelligent energy management, and
near-zero operational noise — all
increasingly critical for modern
urban distribution environments.
What makes this transition
particularly significant is that
electri昀椀cation is no longer being
viewed solely as a sustainability
initiative. Instead, it is becoming
an operational and economic
strategy aimed at reducing fuel
dependency, lowering lifecycle
costs, improving fleet uptime,
and enabling compliance with
evolving ESG expectations across
supply chains.
