he world’s logistics infrastructure
is undergoing one of its biggest
transformations in decades.
Airports, seaports, and logistics
parks, once viewed simply as
transit points for cargo, are rapidly evolving
into intelligent, interconnected ecosystems
powered by Arti昀椀cial Intelligence (AI), robotics, predictive analytics, and automation.
From automated container terminals at
global gateway ports to smart cargo facilities
across airports, logistics and freight hubs are
evolving into highly connected ecosystems
capable of moving cargo with far greater
precision and efficiency than traditional
infrastructure ever allowed.

Digital twin technology forms a key part
of the airport’s long-term SMART Airport
Vision and future Terminal 5 expansion
strategy. Driverless autonomous tractors and
cargo equipment are already being tested
as part of broader automation initiatives.

to reduce congestion

autonomously
Tuas Port: Automated
Container Hub of the Future
When it comes to intelligent cargo infrastructure, Singapore Changi Airport continues
to set the global benchmark. The airport
handled more than 2 million tonnes (MT)
of air freight in 2025, making it Southeast
Asia’s largest air cargo hub and one of the
busiest worldwide.
Tuas Port in Singapore is a next-generation,
fully automated, and sustainable mega
seaport developed as a “future Western Gateway” that will feature one of the world’s most
advanced automated container terminals.
Designed to handle up to 65 million TEUs
annually after its completion in 2040, the
port will integrate 5G-enabled driverless
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs),
AI-assisted vessel tra昀케c systems,
automated yard cranes, and centralised digital control centres to
streamline container movement
across the terminals.
Instead of relying heavily
on manual coordination, Tuas
uses real-time operational data
to optimise 26 kilometres of
deep-water berths allocation,
reduce vessel waiting times,
and improve container turnaround e昀케ciency.

arious other seaports worldwide
are aggressively investing in
automation and AI-driven operations. Similarly, the Port of Shanghai
has adopted automated terminals,
AI-based stowage systems, and
digital twin technology to improve
crane productivity and minimise
re-stowage rates. In Europe, the Port
of Rotterdam operates highly automated cargo terminals at Maasvlakte
II, integrating robotics, IoT sensors,
and predictive maintenance systems.
It has become one of Europe’s leading examples of digitally integrated
maritime logistics. Furthermore,
Duisburger Hafen AG (Duisport), the
world’s largest inland container port
in Germany, operates ten container
terminals and approximately 130
di昀昀erent crane systems. Simply put,
these ports are becoming digitally
orchestrated trade ecosystems
capable of handling rising cargo
volumes with greater e昀케ciency and
lower operational friction.
Logistics Parks Are
Becoming Smart Industrial
Ecosystems
L
ogistics parks, which connect
ports, airports, warehouses, and
end consumers, are evolving just as
quickly. Sustainability is also becoming central to logistics park development, with operators increasingly
investing in energy-e昀케cient systems
and green logistics infrastructure.
For instance, the logistics hubs at
Jeddah Islamic Port features advanced
digital infrastructure and automation
for real-time tracking and automated
handling, aligning with Saudi Vision
2030. Meanwhile, Singapore’s Jurong
Logistics Hub integrates autonomous
vehicles, AI, and Digital Twin technology to optimise logistics operations.
