IMF forecasts India to claim third spot in global
economy within 3 years
I
ndia has surpassed Japan to
become the world’s fourthlargest economy and is on
track to overtake Germany within
the next 2.5 to 3 years.
The IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook report projects
India’s nominal GDP to reach
US$4.19 trillion in 2025, slightly
surpassing Japan’s US$4.19 trillion. India remains the fastestgrowing major economy, expected
to maintain over 6% growth in
the coming two years.
By 2028, India’s GDP is
forecast to hit US$5.58 trillion,
overtaking Germany, whose GDP
is projected to stagnate due to
global trade challenges, reaching
US$5.25 trillion. Japan’s growth
is also expected to slow, with an
estimated 0.6% increase in 2025
and 2026.

The United States will continue as the largest economy,
with a GDP projected at US$30.5
trillion in 2025, followed by China
at US$19.2 trillion. However, the
US growth rate is expected to
slow to 1.8% in 2025 and 1.7%
in 2026 amid ongoing trade
tensions.
The Eurozone’s growth is
forecast at 0.8% in 2025, improving slightly to 1.2% in 2026.
Among European countries, Spain
is expected to outperform with
2.5% growth in 2025, slowing to
1.8% in 2026. The UK is projected
to grow by 1.1% and 1.4% in 2025
and 2026, respectively, while
France is expected to see modest
growth of 0.6% and 1%.
‘Bills of Lading, 2025’ Bill passed in Rajya
Sabha, paving way for new shipping law
n the 昀椀rst day of the monsoon session, the
Rajya Sabha passed the ‘Bills of Lading, 2025’
bill, which now awaits Presidential assent.
The bill, introduced by Union Shipping Minister
Sarbananda Sonowal, will replace the 169-year-old
Indian Lading Act, 1856, with a modern, simpli昀椀ed,

and internationally aligned legal framework for
maritime shipping documentation in India.
The new law updates outdated terminology,
clari昀椀es rights and obligations for carriers, shippers,
and lawful holders, reduces ambiguity to lower
litigation risks, and aligns India’s maritime laws
with global standards.
The bill also empowers the Central Government
to issue directions for e昀昀ective implementation
and ensures continuity of past actions under the
old Act. These reforms aim to enhance clarity,
simplify enforcement, and improve ease of doing
business in India’s maritime sector.
Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the bill as a
vital step toward replacing colonial-era laws with
a modern framework to support India’s growing
maritime trade and strengthen its position in
global commerce.
