Engineering the
Supply Chain with
a Patient First
Mandate
In the highly regulated world of biopharmaceuticals, supply chain decisions
carry implications far beyond operational efficiency. Therefore, it becomes
paramount for organisations like Bharat Serums and Vaccines (BSV),
to operate within a framework where quality assurance, risk mitigation,
and compliance remain uncompromising priorities. Ashish Mohan, VP–
Procurement & Supply Chain at BSV, outlines how the company is enforcing rigorous packaging material qualification processes and strengthening
temperature-controlled logistics frameworks to driving packaging innovations
such as honeycomb carton structures that optimise shipping efficiency, Capturing these perspectives, SMITI SURI brings into focus how BSV is shaping
a logistics ecosystem that combines structured third-party logistics partnerships, multi-layered airline and regulatory approvals, and the role of market
intelligence in ensuring commercial competitiveness.
B
SV’s Pursuit of Scientific
Excellence
Bharat Serums and Vaccines
(BSV) is an Indian biopharmaceutical company founded
in 1971 that specialises in
developing, manufacturing, and marketing
biological, biotech, and pharmaceutical
products. A subsidiary of Mankind Pharma
since October 2024, its key therapeutic areas
include women’s health, critical care, and
fertility. BSV’s product portfolio includes
fertility hormones, antitoxins, and other
emergency and critical care medicines.
Quality First, Always
At the core of everything BSV does lies
quality. In the pharmaceutical domain,
the principle is simple yet absolute - the
foremost responsibility is toward the patient.
A patient-centric approach de昀椀nes every
process, and quality compromise at any
stage is non-negotiable.
Even though quality control may not
directly fall under our function, we take
ownership to ensure it remains uncompromised. For instance, when it comes to
primary packaging materials, we do not
accept or entertain any unquali昀椀ed mate-
rial. The same level of scrutiny extends to
secondary and tertiary packaging as well,
with every component undergoing a rigorous
quali昀椀cation process before approval.
Planning, Preparedness, and Speed
as the Cornerstone of Logistics
Efficiency
Logistics e昀케ciency begins with meticulous
planning. Every idle hour costs e昀케ciency
and momentum. The goal is clear — every
site must be ready so that loading begins
the moment a vehicle arrives. The faster
the turnaround, the greater the e昀케ciency
across the network.
Speed, however, is not just about
performance, it is also about risk control.
Timely dispatch and delivery signi昀椀cantly
reduce the risk of product exposure or
temperature deviation, especially for sensitive pharmaceutical cargo.
The Honeycomb Solution That
Optimises Space and Safety
BSV handles a large volume of parenteral
vials — small glass containers used for
injectable medicines, where the contents are
drawn into a syringe before administration to
patients. Earlier, these vials were exported in
multiple small cartons, consuming excessive
