LTL : THE NEW
MATH OF FREIGHT
India’s road freight sector is recalibrating
around a new operating logic—one where
frequency outweighs fill rates, consolidation
defines cost discipline, and network density
determines long-term competitiveness. As
shipment sizes fragment and customer
expectations accelerate, LTL is moving from
being a tactical alternative to becoming a
structurally significant pillar within the freight
ecosystem. In this in-depth feature, Smiti Suri
and Akanksha Singh maps the forces
reshaping LTL into a precision-driven strategy,
where density, discipline, and digital orchestration collectively define the future of road
freight. In effect, this feature examines how
the evolving “new math” of freight is unpacked
across operational, financial, and regulatory
dimensions.

ndia’s road freight market is undergoing a structural recalibration. While Full
Truck Load (FTL) continues to anchor bulk
industrial movements, Less-Than-Truckload
(LTL) or Part Truck Load (PTL) is steadily
expanding its footprint across sectors shaped
by fragmentation, frequency, and speed.
Industry estimates indicate that retail
and e-commerce alone could account for
close to 40% of global LTL demand in
2026. Consolidation-led domestic and international
movements are estimated to represent around 30% of
cargo 昀氀ows, in major markets, growing at double-digit
CAGR in several corridors.
