Air cargo industry strengthens sustainability
efforts, but challenges remain
A
TIACA report reveals that
96% of air cargo leaders
have CEO support for
sustainability, with 88% noting
CFO involvement. 71% of companies now have sustainability
strategies, rising to 84% for larger
昀椀rms. Investments are growing,
but only 32% deploy fossil-free
energy solutions, and SAF adoption remains limited. Instead,
companies prioritise 昀氀eet modernisation, energy e昀케ciency, and
digital transformation. 91% are
eliminating single-use plastics, yet
structured sustainability reporting lags among SMEs. While 46%
publish sustainability reports,
the number rises to 69% for
large 昀椀rms. The industry shows
progress, but greater investment
and integration are needed.

total revenue of US$22.7 billion. Ranking third globally with a 5.7%
market share (9.9B FTKs), Turkish Cargo operates in 133 countries
with a 昀氀eet of 24 freighters and 468 passenger aircraft. The airline

orders amid strong
Q3 performance
edEx has ordered eight BoeF72-600
ing 777 freighters and 10 ATR
turboprops as part of its
fleet modernization strategy.
Deliveries for the 777Fs will
begin in 2026, while the ATR
turboprops will arrive between
2027 and 2029. Additionally,
FedEx will extend MD-11

Lufthansa Cargo faces fleet delays but eyes
growth in emerging markets
L
ufthansa Cargo is facing
freighter delivery delays,
with its 昀椀rst B777-8F now
expected in 2028, a year later
than planned, due to supply chain
issues. Senior Director Heike
Woerner highlighted the aging
global cargo 昀氀eet, with 30% of
aircraft over 30 years old, and
widebody belly capacity still 19%
lower than 2019 levels. The airline
is also navigating geopolitical and
regulatory challenges, including US tari昀昀s, EU e-commerce
regulations, and Russian airspace
closures. Despite these hurdles,
Lufthansa Cargo sees growth
potential in India, Vietnam, and
other Asian markets, while Germany and Europe face stagnation.
The air cargo sector is expected
to expand in 2025, driven by
e-commerce, semiconductors,
and pharmaceuticals. Lufthansa
Cargo currently operates twelve
B777-200Fs and, via Lufthansa
CityLine, four A321-200(P2F)s.
Kuehne+Nagel joins HAV’s Airlander futures
network to explore hybrid airships for freight
K
uehne+Nagel (K+N) has joined the Airlander
Futures Network, a collaboration exploring
Hybrid Air Vehicles’ (HAV) airships as a
sustainable alternative for freight transport. The
initiative aims to bridge the gap between fast,
carbon-intensive airfreight and slow, cost-e昀昀ective
surface transport. The Oregon Department of
Human Services’ O昀케ce of Resilience and Emergency
Management has also joined to assess Airlander’s
potential in humanitarian aid and disaster relief,
leveraging its long endurance and large payload

capacity without requiring traditional runways.
Airlander 10, HAV’s first commercial airship,
o昀昀ers 100+ seat passenger mobility or a 10-tonne
freight payload, with customers like Air Nostrum
Group and Grands Espaces already onboard. In
the future, larger Airlander models could carry
up to 200 tonnes, promising enhanced e昀케ciency
and lower emissions. HAV sees the network as
key to collaborative innovation in the freight and
logistics sector, helping shape future airship designs
to meet industry needs and sustainability goals.
athay Cargo Terminal has
Chandling
become the first groundorganisation in Asia to
achieve IATA Security Management System (SeMS) certification at the highest Operating
Status tier. This milestone
underscores its commitment to
security, with AI-driven intruder
detection, cybersecurity investments, and robust regulatory
compliance. IATA praised the
terminal’s risk-based, proactive
approach to aviation security.
The formal certification will
be presented at the IATA World
Cargo Symposium in Dubai on
April 15. Cathay Cargo Terminal
also holds IATA’s IEnvA, CBTA,
and all four CEIV certifications,
further solidifying its industry
leadership in safety and
compliance.
